Recognizing a Lifetime of ULI Leadership

Former ULI Europe Chairman Alexander Otto and current ULI Asia Pacific Chairman Nicholas Brooke, two of the Institute’s most engaged and distinguished leaders, were chosen to be ULI Life Trustees during FY 2018.

In the 82-year history of ULI, fewer than 20 members have been honored with the prestigious recognition, making the selection of two Life Trustees during one year particularly significant.

The Life Trustee recognition is awarded to individuals whose service to ULI has been meaningful, distinctive, and extraordinary. ULI selects individuals based on specific contributions of time and resources to ULI and the ULI Foundation; leadership and participation in committees, task forces, councils, and advisory services; standing and reputation in the land use industry; and years as a ULI Full Member and Trustee. Otto and Brooke are both longtime members of ULI who have contributed significantly to the expansion of the Institute in Europe and Asia Pacific.

  •  “I value my ULI membership because it has allowed me to exchange ideas with top decision-makers from politics and business about the future of urban development.”

  • ULI has the unique ability to shape and influence the design and planning of the urban fabric for the benefit of future generations.”

“Nick and Alex are quintessential ULI leaders, giving back selflessly to improve our organization and expand ULI’s reach,” said ULI Global Chairman Thomas W. Toomey. “Their commitment to ULI, the industry, and their communities is a true inspiration. Their work has greatly benefited ULI and will continue to benefit ULI globally.”

Otto, a member for 17 years, is the chief executive officer of ECE Projektmanagement in Hamburg, Germany. His extensive volunteerism at the Institute includes service as ULI Europe chairman from 2009 through 2011 and ULI Germany chairman from 2003 through 2008. He is a ULI Trustee and a member of the European Retail and Entertainment Council and has served as a board member of the ULI Foundation.

“I am honored to become a ULI Life Trustee. I value my ULI membership because it has allowed me to exchange ideas with top decision-makers from politics and business about the future of urban development,” Otto said.

Brooke, a member for 28 years, is chairman of the Hong Kong Harbourfront Commission in Hong Kong and an acclaimed authority on land administration and planning matters. He began his term as chairman of ULI Asia Pacific in July 2018. He is a ULI Global Board member and has chaired both ULI/World Economic Forum Leadership Symposiums. In addition, he has served on the ULI Global Awards for Excellence Jury, and as a mentor to members of the ULI Young Leaders group since the program’s inception in Hong Kong.

“I truly believe that ULI has the unique ability to shape and influence the design and planning of the urban fabric for the benefit of future generations, and I look forward to addressing the current and future challenges facing Asia’s cities,” Brooke said.
