The ability of members to engage by finding opportunities, sharing knowledge, and making connections took significant steps forward in FY 2018 through the introduction and enhancement of three member benefits: Navigator, an online platform that connects members to volunteer opportunities throughout ULI; Knowledge Finder, a platform connecting members to member-generated content; and the Member Directory, a platform connecting members to other members around the world.
Navigator, which matches members with opportunities to learn, lead, and grow, reflects ULI’s strength as an organization with offerings for members at all stages of their careers. Through Navigator, members can find opportunities based on their interests, career level, location, and time commitment. During FY 2018, nearly 16,000 members visited the platform, which provided access to more than 9,000 engagement opportunities globally, ranging from Product Council membership to service on an Advisory Services panel to service as a Young Leader mentor.
ULI Utah Governance Chairman Christine Richman used Navigator to secure placements on Advisory Services panels. “I had heard for years about the benefits of participating on an Advisory Services panel, but could never figure out how to get invited. Thanks to Navigator, I was invited to my first panel,” said Richman, principal, GSBS Consulting in Salt Lake City. “It was one of the most effective ways I’ve found to increase my participation and the value I get from ULI.”
Knowledge Finder, which connects members to an expanding library of member-generated content and ideas, reflects the willingness of members to share knowledge for the benefit of the industry and communities. Launched in May 2018, the platform contains a wealth of research, including current and back issues of Emerging Trends in Real Estate®, Advisory Services panel reports dating back to the program’s start in 1947, Technical Assistance Panel reports, ULI Case Studies, agendas for Product Council meetings and District Council events, and speaker profiles. It has been used by members more than 6,000 times.
ULI South Korea Executive Committee Member Chungha Cha used both Navigator and Knowledge Finder to learn more about Product Councils and opportunities in Asia. “Navigator helped me search for the current councils available, and I was able to use Knowledge Finder to learn more about the various topics they cover. It is valuable information as I consider ways to expand my involvement with ULI,” said Cha, cofounder and chairman of the Re-Imagining Cities Foundation in Seoul.
The Member Directory, which connects members to the global ULI network, reflects the Institute’s uniqueness as an organization of real estate professionals representing all industry disciplines. Improved and expanded, it allows members to easily create a more robust member profile and to find key contacts. In FY 2018, a Product Council Directory was added that automatically updates each time member profiles are changed. More than 10,500 members have used the Member Directory since it was relaunched, representing a threefold increase from use in years past.
“I am having good success with what I am able to initially find in the Member Directory, and then I can narrow my search and find the people who can reach out to the companies and public-sector officials who might be able to help me,” said ULI Member Susan Morris, principal of the NewHeight Group in Portland, Maine.
